Ayala Center Cebu time 12:10 GMT+8

Maging in sa crowd…makabago.

(Hello Claire Danes!

The Silent Sentinel: The Old Belfry of Jaro Cathedral

November 18, 2005

Standing on the edge of a busy urban plaza in one Philippine city lies one of the tallest stand-alone belfries or campanarios in the country, the Jaro Belfry at the City of Iloilo.

The structure was made not only as a bell tower for the Church, which lies across the road, but also as a watchtower for marauding Moros which were frequent during the Spanish times until the mid-19th Century.

The belfry stands alone from the church for one reason might be is that of earthquakes in which belfries are the first ones to collapse during the tremor. Yet its distinct architecture which can be found nowhere else in the Visayas makes it stand out and thus a landmark of what once the "Forbes Park" of Iloilo.

The belfry has 3 segments made of coral stones and red bricks. On corner of the top of the first story/segment were once stands the statues of saints. On the second and third segement were the bells which was a symbol of the Catholic authority in Spanish Philippines.
Yet in 1948, one of the strongest tremors ever recorded in Philippine history struck the island of Panay. Devastating magnificent structures such as the once magnificent Oton Church and other churches in the island. The belfry was no exception. The second and third segments collapsed to the ground, destroying the campanille.

For years only the first story was left of the original belfry. Until in the early 1990’s when the local government restored its former glory.

Yet the question is: Does it only serve only for aesthetic purposes? As the Ilonggos know that the Jaro Cathedral built its own belfry in the Cathedral itself. The old yet restored belfry stands silently across the road. Using the people’s money (and presumably some private institutions as well/this is not confirmed yet) to reconstruct Jaro’s landmark, the question is what is the purpose of the restored belfry? Its not yet even open for the public, why? You can’t get even inside to get the glimpse of the structure.

Some say it will be used as a Tourist Information Center, I don’t know. Maybe another question raised that: Is it expensive to maintain such heritage that the Ilonggos are proud of? Some say it was a waste of money, some say its good to restore one of Iloilo’s distinct landmark. Yet it can’t serve its original purpose, to house the church bells. So what is it for?

Its not that I’m saying I’m against its reconstruction, I’m even proud of the belfry standing again. I just hope that the belfry will see its purpose being resurrected from the ruins. Other than being the Salognon or rather Ilonggo’s heritage, since reconstructed, hopefully the local government will utilize it before another tremblor might strike again. Reconstructing it again would take years and maybe highly debatable.

How to Write Destiny?

November 12, 2005

Back when I was in high school, I regarded history as a subject that needs memorization of those forgettable dates and unknown and sometimes mispronounced names of places or people. It was a horror for me. I didn’t like history anyway…Among all of those subjects that composed of the Araling Panlipunan subject in secondary school.

Yet, I went on the premier state university with my degree programme: History! I can’t believe it! What job will I get here anyway?! Its so impractical! I hate it! –This was my first reaction.

I don’t know whether it was my instructors who encouraged me not to shift or is it my strong bonding with my maragtas barkada that made me stay in my degree course and even integrate my supposed-to-be-course Broadcast Communication, therefore I was a double major. I suddenly realized that I’m beginning to like it. I moved on.

So many things that I’ve learned from the history. Events untold by textbook that gave spice to once bland and boring subject. People that are recognized by their heroism with their other side, they’re still human beings. Beliefs that are conflicting as always. I’ve seen a world in such different perspective than before. I was afraid of it, yet I managed to conquer it.

History doesn’t repeat itself, it is being repeated by the people who write the history. They’re not the chroniclers or historians but the people involved. It is the people and nature that writes the destiny of mankind and not circumstances or sorts. Decisions made by the people or person alters the future. It might be started in just one word or an action that may lead to series of events.

Some people or students perhaps doesn’t appreciate the value that this in our lifetime. Our lives are also part of history, or life histories. They say that they don’t care about those people who did something in order to change the society that they once lived. Actually, we learn from their mistakes. Progress from one state to another is done with trial and errors of our society. These mistakes that happened to our past is our reference or guide in order to refine our society to become better. Yet some people still neglect history. It starts with hating it, unappreciating it and worse ignoring the lessons that the people did before.

Do not blame history with such things or events that are happening to our country. Blame it to those who failed to pass the subject. I didn’t mean its theoretical counterpart but the application of it. See, history can be applied to problems that we confront!

Enrolling as a Bachelor of Arts major in History, I faced the consequences that brought about my decision like lower wages and fewer job opportunities. Yet I’m trying to make it better. I’m proud that with this, like the Oblation, would offer my life to the service of my fellow countrymen without hesitation. It all starts with us as individuals, to change ourselves for the better. With collective change, our society also changes.

I’ll do my part, to teach the succeeding generations of a better life or lessons from mistakes that they (the past) and us did. I’m just hoping that they’re not neglecting it or taking it for granted.

“In order to define the future, one must study the past…” (Kung Fu-Tzu)
